How Abdullah Got His Second Name

The Forever War: Dispatches from the War on Terror The Forever War – Dexter Filkins

You might remember reports of the Afghanistan election in 2009. President Karzai was against an opposition candidate called Abdullah Abdullah.

Pg 66:

“Dr Abdullah had become foreign minister for the new government. … [he]¬†was an ophthalmologist by training, yet with his pale face and dark beard and three-piece suits, he looked more like a silent movie star…

Abdullah had become famous with reporters as the Afghan official with only one name – it used to drive the editors crazy back home. We need a second name, the editors would say, and so, in many newspapers Abdullah became Abdullah Abdullah, the deputy foreign-minister of the Northern Alliance”
